Contemporary to the emergence of anti-colonial senti- ments and expressions, a more complex critique of miscegenation surfaces at this time from within a paternalist, humanitarian anti-racist perspective. And, although this part of history can be seen from different perspectives, this one has its own legitimacy. Turning away from the characteristic short memory informing metropolitan postcolonial nostalgia, the following brings to light how women were interpellated by and in turn responded to the zarlo chal- lenge of Portuguese colonialism, namely convincing young families to settle in and develop the African colonies.
