Show Tons of Love Without Emptying Your Wallet With These *Free* Ways to Romance a Partner

Because not all of us are as naturally sweet as Josh Flagg’s husband!

Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles broker, Josh Flagg, may be a top real estate agent, but his husband Bobby Boyd is on top of his game when it comes to romance. Josh has posted evidence of cute love notes Bobby left for him around the house, which serves as a reminder that you don’t need to spend money to show your partner you care for them. And let’s face it, some of us need more help than others finding meaningful gestures!

According to Gary Chapman’s bestselling book, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts, there are five ways to express and experience love. Each person has his or her own “love language” composed of a special combination of what is most important to them: words of affirmation, acts of service, physical touch, receiving gifts, and quality time.

We compiled the top free romantic ways people have successfully conveyed their appreciation to their partner and matched them according to which works best for each love language!

Words of Affirmation

For these people, words of encouragement are the best way to show support. These can be verbalized or written words conveyed to your partner! Somehow words of affirmation are even more thrilling when they are hidden around the house like how Bobby Boyd surprises Josh!

Ben L. from PA said he uses a dry-eraser marker to write sweet “notes on the mirror" so his fiancé sees them when she wakes up or gets home from work. Other ideas include slipping cute cards into their work bag or using sticky notes around the house. If you are feeling extremely sentimental, you can write different things you love about your partner on several pieces of paper and fold them up into a jar, which they can pull out and read anytime they need a confidence boost!

Acts of Service

Actions speak louder than words for this love language, so showing devotion through thoughtful acts is most meaningful to them.

Jason G. of NY scores points “doing things I know my girlfriend will need to do before she realizes she needs to do them.” He explained that his main goal is to "make life as convenient and problem free as possible” for her. For those who want to alleviate stress from their partner, these gestures can be anything from offering to complete chores their partner typically hates doing, or surprising them by making their favorite dinner, if you know they've had a hard day.

Physical Touch

This love language is all about using loving gestures through appropriate touch for those who value the more physical aspects of their relationship (such as holding hands or cuddling, etc.).

Oliver F. of CA told us “unsolicited massages” are a huge hit in his house. Offering to give one before being asked is as thoughtful as it gets if your partner is the type of person who loves massages. It doesn't take much to set up a little romantic massage station in your home, using materials you likely already own! This can be achieved by dimming the lights, putting on some relaxing music, laying out a soft towel and using their favorite scented lotion to set the mood! Putting in the extra effort to create a romantic ambiance is a good way to show how much you care.

Receiving Gifts

For some, receiving presents is what makes them feel loved.

Ashish P. of NY said making a “James Kennedy x LaLa playlist usually does the trick” with his wife since she loves Vanderpump Rules. Presents don't have to be store-bought to be thoughtful and romantic — aside from playlists, taking a beautiful picture of something loved by your partner, or making one-of-a-kind art for them can evoke a similar emotion.

Quality Time

This particular love language is all about distraction-free quality time and giving the other person your undivided attention.

Aaron F. of NJ said a thoughtful thing he has done for partners includes “learning the lyrics to some of their favorite songs (typically ones you don't listen to/outside your favorite genre) and singing it back to them at unexpected moments.” Talk about paying attention to your partner's interests — Who doesn't love being serenaded with some passionate eye contact?! Other ways of enhancing quality time with your partner include muting your phone and leaving it in your pocket when you are with them. Planning a day doing their favorite activities together, or setting up a romantic picnic in the park will also impress them!

Not sure what your particular love language is or your partner's? Gary Chapman’s website offers a free quiz that will reveal your individualized combination! Also, shout out to Bobby Boyd for the inspiration!
